Understanding Recurring Deposits (RD)
A Recurring Deposit (RD) is a special term deposit service offered by commercial banks in India. It is designed to help salaried individuals and small savers build up a savings corpus by making regular, fixed monthly deposits. RDs typically offer interest rates comparable to Fixed Deposits (FDs), making them far more rewarding than standard savings accounts.
Unlike an FD where you must make a large one-time deposit, an RD requires you to deposit a pre-determined sum every month (e.g., ₹1,000 or ₹5,000) for a fixed tenure (usually 6 months to 10 years). The interest on an RD compounds quarterly, utilizing mathematical formulas that account for the staggered dates of each monthly installment.
RDs are ideal for achieving short-term financial goals, such as saving for holiday trips, paying school admission fees, purchasing jewelry, or preparing for insurance premium payments. They instil strong financial discipline by obligating you to set aside a fixed sum each month, without exposing your hard-earned savings to market volatilities.
Disclaimer: RD interest rates match FD rates and vary by bank and tenure. Always check penalty clauses for late monthly deposits before opening an RD account.
अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
What happens if I miss a monthly Recurring Deposit payment?
If you miss or delay a monthly RD deposit, most banks levy a small penalty charge, typically in the range of ₹1 to ₹2 per ₹100 of the monthly deposit. If you miss consecutive payments (usually 4 to 6 months), the bank reserves the right to close the RD and pay out the matured amount at a reduced rate.
Is Recurring Deposit interest taxable?
Yes. Just like FDs, the interest earned on RDs is fully taxable based on your income tax slab. If your total interest income across all term deposits in a bank exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens) in a financial year, banks will deduct TDS at 10%.
What is the minimum and maximum tenure for an RD?
The minimum tenure for a Recurring Deposit in Indian banks is generally 6 months, and the maximum tenure is 10 years. You can select any duration within this range in multiples of 3 months.
Can I withdraw money from an RD before maturity?
Yes, you can prematurely close your RD account. However, you will receive interest only for the duration the deposit actually remained with the bank, minus a premature withdrawal penalty of 0.5% to 1.0%. Partial withdrawals are generally not allowed.
