Tax Deductions on Education Loans (Section 80E)
To ease the burden of higher education, the Government of India provides tax deductions under Section 80E of the Income Tax Act:
- Deduction on Interest Repaid: You can claim a deduction for the entire **interest amount** paid during the financial year. (Unlike home loans, there is no upper limit/cap on the interest amount you can claim).
- Who can claim? The loan must be taken for higher education of self, spouse, children, or a student for whom you are the legal guardian.
- Claim Period: The deduction is available starting from the year you begin repaying the interest, up to a maximum of **8 consecutive financial years** or until the entire interest is paid off, whichever is earlier.
