Understanding UPI Limits and RBI Regulations

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a real-time instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). While UPI transactions have skyrocketed, NPCI and individual banks enforce limits to manage payment security and reduce digital fraud.

NPCI Daily Limits:

The maximum money that can be sent via UPI in a single day is capped at ₹1,00,000. This applies to standard Peer-to-Peer (P2P) transfers. However, for specific high-value categories like capital markets, insurance, collections, and credit card bill payments, the NPCI has raised the transactional limit up to ₹2,00,000. For hospitals and educational institutions, payments up to ₹5,00,000 are allowed.

First-Time User Caps:

To safeguard users from cyber-frauds, RBI guidelines mandate that when a user creates a new UPI profile or resets their UPI PIN, they can transfer a maximum of ₹5,000 in the first 24 hours. Check our database comparison above to see specific bank limitations.
